Someone asked me the other day why we use the generic WordPress template for this blog site. This blog is using the basic WordPress layout with just the our logo and the banner color changed to gold.
My first response was that we were busy and just hadn’t gotten around to changing it. Of course, I didn’t want to sound like we didn’t know how to change the look and feel of the WordPress engine. As a matter of fact, there is a whole world of options, templates, and code customizing to WordPress. It’s an incredible tool. But it got me thinking, we hadn’t spent time customizing this blog site because we really have better things to do with our time.
No, it’s not a matter of “good enough.” When you’re a perfectionist, that’s never an option. But it’s about choosing the right tool for the job. You can dig a hole with a hammer, and you can pound a nail with a shovel – but that’s certainly not the best way. This WordPress blog engine does a fantastic job providing a fully functional website application. It serves it’s purpose, with little effort on our part.
We practice what we preach, our products fall under the same ”simple tool” concept. And we use a number of small business tools to make our operations run smoothly. One of my other favorites is the virtual PBX phone system we use through RingCentral.com. RingCentral’s virtual PBX takes care all of the nuances of running a phone system. It may be cool technology to play with, but I certainly don’t want to spend many hours, and many of thousands of dollars, setting up my own PBX. That’s what we tell our customers (here comes the shameless salespitch): you can spend untold hours and dollars setting up your own OLAP tools, or use our product and forget about all the hassles.
